The fifth annual Menlo Quilt Show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 17 at the Lawrence Center in Menlo. Last year, one quilt that drew a lot of interest was an 1861 vintage quilt that Emily Easter Carroll brought to her marriage when she wed Sylvester Hosmer in 1861. Event organizer Glenda Hamilton said this year's event will have even more entries than last year.
The event is sponsored by the Resident Association of the Menlo Housing Authority. That group is also selling tickets for a chance on a beautiful quilt that was donated in memory of Ms. Lillie Jordan. She was an exceptional volunteer to the Resident Society events, according to Hamilton. She was a lovely lady who was always willing to help in all ways and she is missed.
The quilt measures 60 inches by 70 inches and the pattern is unique as it is named “Summerville.” It was made by Kathryn Chitwood, of Glencoe, Ala., Diane Woodall and Debra Edwards. These women include Lillie’s sister, daughter and niece.
Tickets can be purchased for $1 each and they are available at the Menlo Housing Authority Office and Menlo City Hall. They also have individual volunteers with tickets. So if by chance you meet one of them, consider buying a ticket. Funds from this project and the $3 admission will help the association who sponsors the Reading Buddies Program, Veterans Marker Project and other needs in the community. Their goal is to make a difference and impact on the community in which they live.
The winning ticket will be drawn at the quilt show. You don't have to be present to win. Registration/show forms are available. You can obtain information at the office or by contacting Hamilton at 706-862-2240.
