Four primitive camp sites are now open for public use at James H. “Sloppy” Floyd State Park.
The camp sites, which rent for $15 a night, are about a half-mile hike from the Jenkins Gap Trail parking lot.
“Those are back country sites, so you’re going to need to be able to bring in what you’ll need by backpack,” said Floyd State Park Manager Steven Emery.
The sites each include a fire ring and picnic table. The ground has been leveled off in places for tents.
“They are really nice sites,” Emery said. “They sit on a little stream.”
Two of the sites are fairly close together while the other two are further away. A single outhouse facility serves all four locations.
Each site is limited to two tents and six people. Campers will have to provide all their own equipment, food and drinking water.
“Campers will need to bring what they need because these really are primitive sites,” Emery said.
Anyone interested in using the back country sites should contact the park for details or to make reservations at 706-857-0826.
Experts from Georgia State Parks will teach a course in beginning backpacking at Floyd State Park on April 4-5. The instruction will include an overnight stay at the park’s new primitive camp sites.
“The course will start at 10 a.m. with an overview for beginning hikers or people needing a refresher course,” said Emery. “That will include trail safety, trail etiquette and how to pack a backpack properly.”
The group will then make the half-mile hike to the camp sites where they will be taught how to set up a camp, how to put up a tent and how to start a fire.
Campers will stay the night.
The cost of the program is $25 for each person. That includes site rental.
Emery suggest that anyone interested should call the park office at 706-857-0826 for more details, including a list of what items the campers will need to bring.
