Lyerly Town Council last week voted unanimously to roll back property tax rates slightly.
The new millage rate for the town will be 10.142. That’s down from 10.20.
The rollback was required by state law even though property tax values in the town decreased slightly, according to the Chattooga County Tax Office.
Tax bills were mailed out on Tuesday, according to Town Clerk Sally Kerce. Tax bills are usually sent out in October but were delayed this year because computer software changes in the tax office led to the town receiving the tax digest late. Because of the delay in mailing bills, Lyerly property owners will have until Jan 10 to pay. The normal deadline was in December.
