City July Fourth Celebration Fireworks Is Scheduled July 1
Planning ahead, Summerville officials set the date for their Celebrate Independence Day event for Saturday, July 1.
"This is our 10th anniversary of having it. If you guys would like to have something special happening, we can talk about it now or you can give me a call. We are going to have the sack races, corn hole tournament and the greasy pole went good last year," City Manager Tony Carroll said.
Of course, the city will put on its firework show. They also plan to spend $13,000 on fireworks, which is about $2,500 more than normal.
"We get a discount if we purchase them in March," the city manager said.
The city will also spend $2,300 on getting the Atlanta Production Band (APB) to headline the event.
"Everybody seemed to enjoy them last year. They played well past the fireworks show last year," Carroll said.
The city will also hire an opening band for $750. That band has not been selected.
Other expenses, according to city officials include:
* $800 to rent inflatable jumping gyms for children
* $800 to rent extra porta-toilets.
* $200 to give out prizes and medallions
* $800 to rent sound and light equipment
The city plans to recoup part of its $18,350 in expenses through a $5,000 Tillotson-Menlo Charitable Trust Grant and selling $10,000 worth of banners advertising the event.
The city's general fund will cover the remaining $3,350, according to the city manager.
