“I followed the male into the woods and followed the sounds of him crashing through the woods,” Officer Fountain stated. We exited the woods into a yard at the intersection of Maple and Selman Drive. I noticed when we came out of the woods a strong odor of alcoholic beverage in the air.”

Officer Fountain briefly lost sight of the suspect around Maple Drive. Other police units, however, had arrived and Officer David Westbrooks spotted the male running across the street toward Selman Drive.

“I started to look around the residence when I heard Officer David Westbrooks yell, ‘there he is.’ I turned and ran toward them and saw them running across the roadway. I noticed the male (suspect) as he ran off the roadway, fall, and tripping in a ditch,” Officer Fountain stated.

The suspect was Maurice Mitchell, 29, of 112 East Valley Road, Rome. He was arrested for DUI, failure to use turn signals, failure to stop at a stop sign, littering, violation of a limited permit, fleeing or attempting to elude police officers, failure to maintain a single lane and driving with an expired tag.
